Keep an Open-Ear with New Bose Earphones at Kimstore!

When shopping for new earbuds, you might have seen the term “open-ear design” touted on the packaging on some models, wondering what it means. Well, it just means the dynamic driver pushing the sound sits outside your ear canal, rather than inside. You’ll most likely see these on earbuds that don’t have the typical silicone eartips that provide grip and seals off your ears.

This way, you’re still able to remain attuned to your surroundings without just turning off your music. Of course, it does mean a few changes and even compromises in some areas:

The “Open-Ear” Experience

Right away, most open-ear buds have been associated with being clunk and even a little uncomfortable. They’re built with other extensions that help clip or hook around your earlobe since its eartips won’t be sitting inside your canal. Depending on how the buds attach, this could get uncomfortable after a while.

Additionally, spatial audio is usually out when it comes to open-ear designs. After all, this is a feature that benefits heavily from having a decent seal as well as the drivers’ close proximity to your canal. There’s usually no form of active noise cancellation on these buds as well, by virtue of what their design is meant to accomplish.

On the other hand, this does give you more environmental awareness for when you’re out and about. In our experience, this is a good option for when you’re commuting or even exercising, making it easier to be aware of other vehicles or pedestrians around you.

Of course, this isn’t a universal statement. After all, sound quality ultimately depends on fit and you can easily find an open-ear model that is both comfortable and offers sound quality way above even in-ear designs. And we just so happen to have one of these here at Kimstore:

Meet the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Open Earbuds!

The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Open Earbuds is the brand's take on this open-ear design. According to Bose’s official pages, the buds have been engineered with comfort in mind first, designing something you can supposedly wear all day without any issues, and without contrasting with any earrings or accessories you currently have.

So let’s talk about the design first. It’s a simple clip-on design that kind of reminds us of a big earring. A flexible and surprisingly soft silicone band just wraps around your ear cartilage, helping achieve a comfortable and snug fit. It’s definitely a bit of a learning curve to get them just right though.

The earbuds are very comfortable though. It’s kind of a weird fit at first but fortunately, the softer silicon does help our ears adjust after a while. You should be able to go for hours without even noticing your buds are still on.

Open-Ear Design meets Bose’s Spatial Audio

But how is the sound you’re probably wondering? Well right out of the gate, the Bose QuietComfort Open Ultra Earbuds sound very good. And that’s even when we consider the typical trade-offs like the lack of active noise cancellation.

Bose managed to accomplish this via their OpenAudio technology, which kind of mimics the spatial audio tech it packs inside their in-ear or over-ear design. The way it works is that the buds automatically direct the sound to your ears based on your head orientation, maintaining a very consistent sound experience throughout.

No problems with audio leakage either, making it perfect for calls as well due to the added layer of privacy

Of course, we’re not going to argue that it’s the same as a proper in-ear design with built-in noise cancellation features like their QuietComfort Ultra. For one, it doesn’t get nearly as loud, especially around the bass parts. It’s very close though and the sound is very balanced overall.

Convenient Controls…with some Caveats

Controlling your playback is easy enough as the Bose Ultra Open comes with actual physical buttons. As reference, a single press plays/pauses your playback. Two presses in quick succession fast forwards it to the next track while three presses return to the previous track. You can control this with either the left or right earbud; it doesn’t matter.

Volume on the other hand, can be a little unintuitive. You have to press the button and then hold it first, with the left earbud acting as the volume down, and the right earbud acting as the volume up button. Either way, we ultimately found it easier to just control the volume on our actual smartphones.

Still, having the physical buttons does do wonders for our peace of mind. Sure, they function similarly to touch controls but the actual physical feedback does help reassure us that our commands actually went through. It’s definitely a worthwhile addition.
