Build 3D Graphics on the Go! Blender coming to Tablets Soon!

Big win for artists itching to create no matter where they are! Popular, open-source 3D graphics software Blender 3D is reportedly working on a version that can run on your tablet, no matter if you have an iPad or an Android-based tablet.

“Multi-touch interfaces like tablets have been common for years, but only recently thanks to increased processing power, have they started to serve as primary computing devices.” the company says in a blog post.

“To support Blender’s mission of making 3D technology accessible to everyone, it’s important to fully embrace these platforms. Some of these devices include Apple iPad, Microsoft Surface, Huawei MatePad, and the Wacom MovinkPad, among others.” the post concluded.

Should be an interesting development. We’ve already talked about using a tablet as a primary “computing” device at some point and seeing originally desktop-only apps make their way to more and more powerful yet portable devices is just one factor that spearheads this development.

Small Start, No Compromises

According to their post, the Blender team will be working with the iPad version first, owing to its synergy with the Apple Pencil, before moving to Android and other graphic tablets in the future. The team’s also looking to preserve the full functionality of the desktop software, making it easy for users to seamlessly switch between two environments.

This way, any UI/UX improvements done to the desktop side can easily be ported to the portable version around the same time.

Blender’s not looking to target any non-users or prospects with this change either. They’ve stated that this portable version will be for “Blender users” first. Especially artists that do use a pen-device for more specialized tasks.

Planned Improvements

With the tablet version, Blender’s also looking to design new features that will also make their way to the desktop version. According to their blog, some features already in the works include:

• A Quick Favorites editor

• Helper overlay with curated shortcuts

• Icon support for sidebar tabs

• Toggleable sidebar tabs

That said, they are also working on features that’s exclusive to the tablet version, given the nature of these computing devices like multi-touch events and gestures for use with the touchscreen.

Still, it’s important to remember that this is just an announcement for now. We don’t have a concrete release date for the project, with the Blender team still looking for additional developers to help out. Still, they did promise to show off a tech demo running on an iPad Pro at the SIGGRAPH 2025 graphics conference in Vancouver.
