Samsung’s New One UI 8: Changes and Features
In addition to all the new hardware changes and performance improvements brought by the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7, there’s also One UI 8 for us to check out. Ahead of our own foldables unboxing, we’ve started listing down all the news and features this new skin is bringing over.
There’s a wide array of changes coming on the horizon, both for productivity and accessibility. And perhaps one change that won’t go down well with enthusiast users in particular:
File Sharing Made Easier
Here’s to all those actually treating their phones as a new portable computer. File sharing is now made easier with One UI 8 thanks to the new Quick Share button in the settings menu. With this window open, it’s much, much easier to send and receive files from other phones using the window.
And yes, it’s part of a wider Android update so you don’t need to work exclusively with other Samsung Galaxy users to take advantage of it. Even older models like the Galaxy S24 can use it fine once they get the update.
To complement this, they’ve also allowed a feature to easily discover files even if you forgot the exact file name. You can now filter files based on the app used to download them so if you got it through Quick Share, it should easily pop up. Samsung also confirmed it to work on both their Downloads and Recents folder in My Files on their changelog.
Open Canvas for Samsung Galaxy?
Kind of like OnePlus’ Open Canvas feature, One UI 8 now supports a 90:10 split for your apps when operating in split-screen mode. And yeah, it should be perfect for foldable phones like the previous generation Galaxy Z Flip6 once Google implements this functionality across Android 16 as a whole.
This way, you get a much wider display for the main app or document you’re working on while easily toggling to your second app without needing to click off either one.
New options for Samsung DeX as well, especially with adjusting the display when connecting to an external monitor or TV. You can even rotate the display 90°, 180°, or 270° if you want as well as change resolutions up to WQHD.

Redesigned Reminders Interface
The default Reminders App has received a bit of a revamp too, with categories now shown at the top of the screen. That way, you can easily keep track of all your upcoming reminders and what they are for at a quick glance. And if you need more space, just tap on any of them to hide them away.
In case it’s still a bit overwhelming, Samsung’s also including sample reminder templates you can copy and use to see which format works best for you.
The new app even synchronizes well with the Calendar app, allowing you to easily create reminders on the Calendar app itself rather than needing to toggle between two different windows. Plus, you can simply drag and drop reminders if you need to reschedule.
Bootloader Unlocking Restricted
Whether you’re running a stable version of One UI 8 on the brand’s latest foldable phones or the beta version on something like the Galaxy S25, Samsung appears to have restricted the ability to unlock the bootloader on the new OS.
Some power users have also dug deep and found no potential workarounds either, with all lines of code controlling bootloader unlocking just removed.
It’s not something that negatively affects most phone users but power users who like to flash their own custom ROMs and kernels were left a little disappointed. Do note that most of the time, doing this will void the manufacturer warranty and expose it to potential security risks if not done carefully.
