Apple iPhone 17 Series: Set for Possible September Release

There’s no way Apple’s being left out of a big tech reveal.

Leaks have now come out regarding the launch date for the brand’s flagship iPhone 17 lineup. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple may be planning an event in the second week of September, either on Tuesday or Wednesday. The new phones will then launch globally on September 19.

A New Addition to the Lineup

Like last year, Apple will be releasing four models albeit with some differences. There’s the base iPhone 17 as their mainstream option and the pricier Pro and Pro Max models for enthusiasts and power users. New to the lineup though, is the rumored iPhone 17 Air or iPhone 17 Slim; Apple’s own take on the slim and lightweight design that’s gotten really popular recently.

Pricing has varied wildly when it comes to this slim model. Initial leaks point to a high-end phone that’s even pricier than the 17 Pro Max but now, it’s looking more like a middle-of-the-road device in the same spot as the earlier iPhone 16 Plus.

Specs are still a little unclear for all four phones except for some news on the display. Initial leaks point to Apple’s now adding their ProMotion display to the whole lineup, not just the Pro models. That means you don’t need to add extra in order to enjoy smooth 120Hz refresh rates on an iPhone!

Goodbye Titanium?

There’s some conflicting reports as to what Apple plans to do with the Pro model phones’ chassis. Early reports claimed that Apple may be ditching titanium for the Pro models, swapping to aluminium instead. However, there’s also recent reports that do affirm that Apple’s sticking with titanium going forward.

A big departure from the likes of the iPhone 16 Pro is in the camera layout. Leaked CAD renders from case manufacturers show a camera array that covers the entire width of the phone, similar to the Google Pixel. All of the main lenses are still kept on one side but other things like the flashlight seem to have been moved to the other for balance.

Colors appear to be similar to the Titanium options already released for the iPhone 16. However, we may see a new Sky Blue color for it that’s a similar shade to the one used on the M4 Macbook Air.

A Closer Look at the Thin and Light iPhone

Rumors surrounding the iPhone 17 Air’s overall dimensions vary wildly but most reports put it somewhere between 5 or 6mm thin. So it’s roughly similar to the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, with its thin 5.8mm chassis.

It might have a bit of a bump thanks to the camera however, which could push it a bit closer to the 6mm limit. As for the spec, reports point to a single-lens rear camera, similar to the iPhone 16e in a way, probably the same fusion style cameras too.

The iPhone 17 Air is rumored to have been brought in to replace the “Plus” for this year, due to lower customer interest. Still, it supposedly won’t replace the line completely so we may still see the bigger non-Pro variant come back in the near future.
