No, that’s not a typo. We’re not comparing base models to the Pro in this one.
With new iPhones come new accessories, including the new Apple AirPods 5! Just like last time though, we’ve got two models to choose from: one with an included Wireless Charging Case and one without. First, let’s see how it compares to the previous generation headset.
With the AirPods 4, you get to choose whether you want the base unit or a slightly more expensive one with ANC features. Not the case this time. Both AirPods 5 options now come with built-in noise cancellation.
Oh, and this also means Live Translation is now accessible on the cheapest AirPods 5 model as well since ANC is a requirement for that to work properly.
Additionally, Apple also claims to have tweaked the ANC performance on both models, blocking up to 50% more noise than the ANC-equipped AirPods 4. Kind of essential since the AirPods 5 are open-wear designs, which tend to let in more environmental sounds. Good for awareness mode but probably not if you wish to vanish in your favorite tunes.
But if that’s the case, is there anything else different between Apple’s two offerings? Yes.
More Features + A Case
By opting for the pricier AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case, you also get features like audible Find My abilities, swipeable volume controls, and even improved battery life. Yes, Apple’s official page lists the case-equipped AirPods 5 as having up to 5 hours of listening time with ANC on, compared to just 4 for the cheaper model.
Pausing and playing your current track, skipping forward or back–these controls are available on both as expected. But if you get the more expensive model, you can now just press on the stem with your finger and swipe up or down to control the volume directly.
It’s a pretty cool feature. You don’t need to open your music player app, wrangle with Siri, or even take your iPhone out of your pocket for five seconds. And of course, there’s the case itself:
Wireless Charging Case w/ Sound
Springing for the more expensive model also gets you the wireless charging case compatible with any MagSafe, Qi, or Apple Watch charger you have lying around. And while both AirPods are compatible with Apple’s Find My feature, the wireless charging case itself comes with a speaker that can play a sound to help you find them just in case.
But are all these little quality-of-life features worth the premium Apple is charging for them over the basic one? That would depend on your use case. The added volume control definitely sounds very convenient for people embarking on longer trips and commutes. That said, you do have alternatives.
