Google Photos may soon let you upgrade photos to Ultra HDR!

Time to level up the photos for your social media posts!

Google Photos is reportedly working on an “Ultra HDR” editing feature for the app, helping users make their photos pop with just a bit more color, contrast, and brightness. It should help you convert your standard format (SDR) images into the Ultra HDR format; something that’s traditionally been a more complicated effort in the past.

And it should be a pretty nice feature to have for phones that can’t quite shoot in HDR with their cameras. You’ll be able to enjoy brighter highlights, darker shadows, and more vibrant colors even to images you’ve already photographed before.

How do I convert images to Ultra HDR with Google Photos?

To start, you need to make sure you’re running Google Photos version 7.24.0.747539053 or newer. Even then, it’s a server-side update so you might have to wait for Google to roll it out for your region if it’s still not showing up on your Android device.

Once you’ve got the latest update, you just need to open an image and then tap “Edit” in order to launch Google Photos’ editor. Go to “Adjust” and you should find the “Ultra HDR” option where the previous “HDR Effect” previously was.

If it works, you might notice that the edited image has a much smaller file size than the original. That’s because the Ultra HDR images apparently use a gain map much smaller than the old image while still storing enough luminosity information so you still get all that nice brightness and color, even without using much data.

So don’t worry. The image didn’t degrade during the editing process or anything. But you might want to keep the original image should you wish to edit it yourself later on.

Right now, not all phones have this new editing feature just yet. Mine doesn’t for one. However, it is capable of shooting in HDR while also having a display that supports HDR so it’s not an issue at all. Still, it should be interesting to see if Google Photos’ solution yields better results compared to just shooting in HDR right from the start, even if it leads to larger file sizes.

Still, you can definitely enjoy the best of both worlds! Choose a Google Pixel device for your next smartphone upgrade, you can get the latest updates and features quicker while still enjoying all that impressive Pixel camera hardware and editing capabilities. Including the ability to natively shoot and display HDR content too!
