Quick Review: Insta360 X3

Insta360 stands out as a very competitive offering among compact handheld cameras for enthusiasts. They have a varied selection of 360° and action cameras for different users and market segments. You also get something like the Insta360 X3, which easily alternates between both modes.

If you’re interested in seeing if this is the right action camera to buy, then we’ve got you covered. You can check out our unboxing video and short review down below:

Buy it if…

You want a very durable camera for your outdoor adventures

First off, action cameras are very durable and the Insta360 X3 is no exception. For example, it’s IPX8, so it’s waterproof up to 10 meters. This should easily handle a quick swim out in the pool or even at the beach provided you don’t dive too deep.

Additionally, the whole camera can be mounted to a wide array of points like your chest, on a helmet, or on your bicycle or motorcycle. There’s also the ergonomic design with just the right amount of contouring, making it comfortable to hold even for extended periods of time whenever you’re out on your trips.

You love capturing your photos in gorgeous 4K

The Insta360 X3 is able to capture 5.7K actually, when using the 360° video mode, letting you capture more of the action. It also gives you a big resolution to work with when it comes to stitching and editing your videos to be the best it can be.

You also get Active HDR, which helps bring up the dynamic range especially when shooting under great lighting conditions. Image stabilization in Single Lens mode is great too, resulting in sharper, more detailed images and video on the screen.

It’s both an action camera and a 360° camera in one package

From our point of view, the biggest reason to go with the Insta360 X3 is that it combines both your action camera needs and 360° camera needs in just one package. Sure, it may not sound as enticing to long-time photographers who already have both, but to beginners looking to try out both products, this is very convenient.

Add that flexibility to all other things that the Insta360 X3 brings (i.e. its durable build, excellent features, and high-resolution) and this is definitely one of the most compelling options on the market today.

Don’t buy it if…

You already have the Insta360 X2

While the screen on the X3 is admittedly a big improvement to convenience from the X2, we think the actual performance of the two cameras are still quite similar. The X3 is a little heavier too, which may come as a bit of a surprise if you’re used to Insta360’s lighter models.

If you need an alternate camera or if you’re not the type to go outdoors as much, then you could just get a good camera phone. The Google Pixel 7A for instance, costs just a little less and offers great camera performance paired with all the other functionalities of a smartphone. Not a bad addition if you already have the Insta360 X2.

You need a more versatile solution for different circumstances

Of course, some professional workloads may require bigger DSLR or even mirrorless cameras, even when factoring in the weight. The ability to tweak settings such as shutter speed and aperture as well as the larger sensors in bigger cameras do make a big difference in professional work.

For example, the Canon EOS 850D makes for a great starting point for those who want to get serious about their professional photography work. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with owning both either. Different tools for different workloads.

You need something a bit cheaper

Given the Insta360 X3’s wide array of features, and portable and durable design does mean it commands a bit of premium at least when compared to other action cameras. Fortunately, we do have plenty of options for aspiring action videographers on a budget.

The SJCAM C200 for example, provides a similar form factor and function. It’s capable of shooting at 4K too, while also offering sufficient stabilization in order to ensure your videos come out good. Not bad for an alternative that’s worth a fraction of the Insta360’s price.
