The Google Pixel 8A is Released!
It’s finally here! After months of speculation and anticipation, the Google Pixel 8A is finally released, promising to bring most of the same flagship hardware found in its flagship Pixel 8 line. This includes things like its excellent camera software, Tensor G3 chipset, supposedly perfect for AI tasks, and overall build and design.
Of course, you might be wondering if this is still a good option this 2024. After all, Google may be gearing up to release the Pixel 9 line and there’s also the other Android options from other brands. Not to mention the base Pixel 8, which is still available here. To help you out, we’ve gathered some of the most important details about the phone here:
Elegant design and amazing photography chops
Design is as expected from a Pixel device. You get the iconic camera strip that sticks out but also helps prevent the phone from wobbling when placed screen up. You get rounded edges, an aluminum frame, and a matte back, leading to a very premium feel across the board. And you get Google’s new Actua display, which Google promises is 40% brighter than the Pixel 7A.
Oh, and you finally, FINALLY get bumped to a 120Hz display, up from the 90Hz on the 7A. About time, considering more affordable phones are getting 120Hz AMOLED displays too.
As for cameras, you get the powerful dual 64MP main lens and 13MP ultrawide lens as expected for the A-series line. There’s a 13MP front camera for selfies and portraits as well. Doesn’t sound like a major shakeup, with many other phones touting more megapixels, but Google should still have a major lead in terms of processing, and once you factor in their AI chops too.
AI features at a more affordable price point
Given that it’s the hot new thing at tech right now, it’s no surprise that Google’s bundling their Google AI suite with the Pixel 8A as well. You get similar features such as Best Take, Magic Editor, and Magic Eraser for its camera suite, and you do get Circle-to-Search, Call Assist, and Summarize in the Recorder app.
And yes, the Pixel 8A is going to get Gemini Nano; meaning you should be able to do all of its promised AI shenanigans on-device without needing to connect to a cloud service. Eventually. See, Google mentioned that Gemini Nano is coming on a future Pixel feature drop, so you won’t have it on day 1.
You’ll also have to enable it directly from Developer Options, which is a similar experience to the base Pixel 8 to be fair. This is speculated to be the result of it only having 8GB RAM, where the AI feature could be taxing. (Though the Galaxy S24 starts with 8GB and has no problems running AI either)

Hope you like black!
Like everything else in the line, you get some storage and color options with the Google Pixel 8A. You can get it with 128GB or 256GB of storage but there’s a bit of a catch. The 256GB model of the Pixel 8A is only available in Obsidian or black.
If you want to get it in Bay (Light Blue), Porcelain (Off-White), or Aloe (Bright Green), you’ll have to stick with the 128GB model. It’s been a point of contention building up to the phone’s release, especially since you typically can’t expand the phone’s storage with an SD card.
Should I buy the Pixel 8A?
With all of that out of the way, is it worth getting the Pixel 8A? As with most of these smartphone questions, it depends. If you’re coming from a much, much older Pixel phone (say, the Pixel 6A), then we think the specs update is worth it. It’s also a good starter Android for those who’re just making a switch without getting the top-tier models.
Otherwise, we think you’ll also be good with just the base Pixel 8. It’s got a good compact feel, while also retaining the Google AI (if that’s a major factor for you), excellent cameras, and it’s even available at a decent price here at Kimstore! Should still be supported for a long while too!
