Building a Cinematic Home Experience with Sembrandt!
Enjoying good Filipino cinema can easily be done outside of the MMFF.
With so many quality movies and TV series making their way to streaming platforms like Netflix for us to enjoy at home, it’s no surprise that people are looking to level up their home entertainment appliances. And for us, the best place to start with is your sound system, especially with all the great audio deals floating around online!
It Starts with a Good Soundbar!

For people looking to elevate their home movie viewing experience on a budget, we recommend starting with a good soundbar. A soundbar basically acts as your front, right, and left speakers, saving you the hassle of buying and setting up three different speakers for your TV. And of course, dealing with all that wiring.
Whether you’ll want a soundbar with front-facing speakers or upward-firing drivers depends on where the soundbar will be placed. You’ll definitely want the former if you’re planning to tuck it in say, a cabinet along with your TV otherwise the sound may just come out muffled. For the latter, you’ll definitely want to keep it clear so that it’s able to project the sound all over the room.
Don’t forget your rear speakers!

While a soundbar alone can already elevate your sound to the next level, this alone isn’t enough to create the full immersive experience. You’ll want to add additional rear speakers, to further magnify all those additional sounds within a film, whether they’re environmental sounds like the wind or all those subtle bumps in the night from a horror movie.
You can place these speakers either directly behind your head (e.g. a small stand behind your sofa) or you can place them on the left and right side of your seat. Don’t worry about mounting them a bit higher either. It can give you an opportunity to position them so that the cans are facing your seating.
And yes, it might take a bit of effort to run those wires back to your TV. Or alternatively, you can just get wireless Bluetooth speakers. Less mess and much, much easier to set up.
What is 5.1 and 7.1 Surround Sound?

If you’re not familiar with them, these numbers basically just tell you how many channels your audio is coming from. If you’re working with a soundbar, then 5.1 surround sound is easy to achieve since you only need to add two more speakers to the rear end of your living room.
Sometimes, your soundbar may even come with an included subwoofer, which might be all that you need! A subwoofer goes a long way in helping you “feel” the audio by producing some of the lower-pitched sounds, easing the pressure on your other speakers. And they come in different sizes too, so you can easily find the one that best fits your room!
7.1 does offer more channels to work with though and it can certainly result in a much more immersive experience. Especially once you add additional overhead speakers, giving you the effect of sound coming from above your head. You may also achieve a similar effect when making use of spatial audio technology to further augment that experience.
